One reason for filtering is, as you say, to avoid having to read
objectionable materials. Someone may frequently write, with messages
filled with bitterness, or being a clown, or mocking Theosophy, or
trying to get us to save our souls and join his church, etc. We
can avoid a topic or type of writing by avoid getting email from
that user.

There are other reasons for filtering. What someone writes may be
perfectly fine, but they may write frequently about things that
we're not interested in reading about, and by filtering them we
"unsubscribe" to their favorite topic while otherwise getting the
list. Someone may like to frequently send poems, or to be highly
involved in discussing politics, or into some other topic that we
might prefer to cut down on.
