bhive,
Do you really want to go there if you're trying to bash the Ballards but
stick up for Theosophy? It'll just open up a big can of worms. How well
read are you in the Theosophical history of early life on Earth?
Blavatsky has a very, very weird tale to tell herself, replete with
those same black magicians, creating all sorts of hybrid monster
animals, mammals appearing on Earth after mankind shows up and other
little things like ants and bees being brought here from Venus, just to
mention a few.

It's quite a ride.

Try to take a good look through the Secret Doctrine Vol 2, and other
books like A.E. Powell's "The Solar System" or W. Scott Elliot's "The
Story of Atlantis and Lemuria" before you go much further.
