It is not gone in Southern California. Of course, we have renamed the
practice, so I guess that makes it OK. The lawns around the Sheriffs
buildings are maintained by them, who we now call "prisoners", but the
shackles, chains, and other equipment are still built on the style of the
utensils in the slave museums.

"Prisoners" are brought to court almost any week day wearing all the chains,
shackles, and all the rest of the equipment that we traditionally associate
with "Slaves". But we Have renamed the whole process. The labor and chain
gangs remain pretty much the same, no matter what the name is.
