Here is a response I posted on listening-l on the issue of vegetarianism.
Might be of some interest to some.

I think that few have seen first hand all cruelty that goes behind the
nicely packed meat one buys from grocery shelves. So if one takes the time
to see the killing better even do it themselves, then perhaps one may come
to a better understanding of the real facts.

In the years past, many slaughter houses in the USA, used to take high
school students on a tour. The result was after the tour many of them no
longer ate meat. After seeing this result, most have stopped the tours.

Years ago one of my friends daughter while visiting England happened to
visit a slaughterhouse and that ended meat eating - instant transformation
- when you see the reality and understand the cruelty the change was
immediate.

>Som: I think the issue is sensitivity. I understand that for quite a
few listers it is a matter of habit that they meat. I am not sitting in
judgement on anyone, but pointing out the contradiction involved in
being on a K-forum and not having the sensitivity to see the cruelty
involved in eating meat, notwithstanding the economic arguments.

I am aware of unease that this topic can cause, as it happened
with my dear wife once. I remarked to her: "do you see the
contradiction involved in your being an animal lover and eating
meat?" She was quite upset by my remark, although, I had no
intention of hurting her -- I honestly do not see how can one be
both at the same time -- an animal lover and a meat-eater.

Whether listers eat meat or not is their outlook. My hope is that K-
readers would have the sensitivity that K talked about. WIthout that
sensitivity, it is impossible to understand what K is saying.

Is this an unrealistic expectation?
