Dear Mauri:

A careful reading of THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY shows that in our
nature (in fact in the whole of NATURE/UNIVERSE) every
individualized center of consciousness, no matter how small or
apparently insignificant, is in reality a composite (of
Spirit-perfection, matter or limited selfish form, and MIND the
ray of the ONE CONSCIOUSNESS that radiates from the ABSOLUTENESS.

This "Three in One," is a difficult concept because we see things
as dualities. We perceive "good" and "bad." We define good as
"lawful, unselfish, brotherly, cooperative, and say to ourselves
" I made a good choice," or, "I made a bad one. Seldom do we
stop and say: "How do I know the difference?"

If we were able to reason that out we would see that we are
neither good nor bad, but always neutral.

It is the neutral MIND aspect that is our true SELF.

Try this reasoning and see if it is not so, once that the desire
and passionate nature (Kama) is controlled and pacified. It
takes WILL and dispassion to do this. The important fact that
this is a Theosophic practice that anyone can use. But, we have
to be totally dispassionate if we are to succeed in using this
all the time. Actually our progress as human mind-being is along
this particular line of development.

To make the distinction between "good," and "bad," let us say
that that which is "good" follows, obeys, encourages, and chooses
to obey according to the LAWS OF NATURE AS A WHOLE. Hence, if we
check this out with all our will, we find we are fundamentally
IMMORTALS. We live in ever changing bodies which are made up of
MONADS ( Atma-Buddhi-Manas) just as we are, fundamentally, but,
they are still to achieve through experience the
individualization of becoming a mental being with the power to
choose.

In the allegory of the Garden of Eden, the fruit (apple) of the
TREE OF LIFE (symbolizing the long pilgrimage of the immortal
Spirit/Soul) gives thinking man the responsibility of determining
for himself the difference between Law and the breaking of law.
That is, the difference between brotherhood and isolation as a
selfish being (which in the long run is impossible).

Result is our perpetual confusion over "What am I? Am I
isolated? Do I remain a selfish, and isolated PERSONALITY, with
a death and a dissolution facing me at the end of this life, or
do I realise that I am an IMMORTAL which temporarily uses this
body as a learning experience -- as a stage in a long program?"

If we decide that we are immortals and important to ourselves,
then we translate that into the study of nature, her rules and
laws and all our relations with other beings. It is a vast study
and requires great and continuous attention, does it not?

You ask about the destruction of the selfish part of us, assuming
perhaps that the "bad man" is an entity in itself. Actually
according to Theosophy this is Lower-Manas (Kama-Manas) the mind
that is wrapped (trapped) in its selfish desire-nature.

Its counter-part (BROTHER) is BUDDHI-MANAS the wise and spiritual
SELF -- associated with Atma, the UNIVERSAL SPIRIT that pervades
everything all the time. In this is the root of brotherhood and
law. In this is our true immortality. Are we willing to grasp
at that concept and use it ? We alone can do that and no one can
do it but ourselves. These are ideas that we have to consider
and see if they are reasonably true and useful for us to consider
applying. We become our own physicians, and the sick Lower-Mind
is taught how to heal itself, to change itself into a spiritual
and immortal being also, as its "elder Brother" is.

The remedy then is not to destroy it, but to change and alter its
goals and orientation. It is an intimate but mistaken part of
ourselves. When, using Theosophy, we become aware of this, we
are able to engage in its careful study, because we are able to
visualize the results of our choices. We can make better
choices. That is the way in which we alter and improve
ourselves. It is like the continuous maintenance and repair that
any house needs. Except here we are doing it internally with the
power of the will/desire to improve and become in PERSONALITY
more PERFECT (as a spiritual being living in the every-day
world).

At lease that is how I see it, and I do hope this may prove of
some use to you,

Best wishes,

Dallas

Dallas,

When you wrote: "WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO DO
NOT SUCCEED ?" I thought you were referring to those on the "left
hand path" who are unable or don't want to escape from that path.
Sorry about my confusion. So in my reply I was speculating what
might happen to them.

Presumably the ones on the right hand path just keep on trying in
a
future life if they "don't succeed" in the current one.

Seems the extent of the generated "new CAUSES" of
individuals/groups on the earth/karma level would be in direct
proportion the the extent of the "ripple-making" of those
individuals/groups.
