Re: BN Study of SD - A few more ideas

Dear Reed:

If you have a set of the old Volumes of LUCIFER [New York ULT has
such a set] available to you, you will find that shortly after
the publication of the SD (1889-1) a series of Studies in the SD
was commenced by "Two Students" -- If you look at them you will
find that they are useful as a guide (as to how this kind of
study was handled when HPB was still alive).

2.	Mr. Judge shows us how he located important statements in the
early pages of the SD -- and he wrote HIDDEN HINTS in the S D
[Judge Articles, ULT Edn. Vol. I p. 599 et seq.] This is another
way for students to approach the SD.

3.	In Magazine THEOSOPHY, Vols. 11 to 13 will be found a series
of Articles entitled STUDIES IN THE SD. These are most valuable
for all of us to read and refer to many times as they cover
essential in Theosophy.

4.	THEOSOPHY Magazine: Vols., 6 to 8 are a series titled SECRET
DOCTRINE TEACHINGS.

5.	SCIENCE AND THE SECRET DOCTRINE is another series of articles
in THEOSOPHY Magazine, Vols. -- a few at a time nd scattered
between Vols. 15 and 39 -- reference to the MAGAZINE THEOSOPHY
INDEX helps to locate them.

6.	Mag. THEOSOPHY, Vols. 3 to 21 was a series FROM THE S D (see
INDEX to THEOSOPHY Magazine for locations).

7.	Magazine PUBLISHED FROM Bombay (India) ULT THE THEOSOPHICAL
MOVEMENT also has a number of series on studying the SD
(different from those published in THEOSOPHY Magazine) and a
reference to the general INDEX of that magazine will locate
these. Most ULTs have in their Library bound volumes of these
magazines.

----------------------------------------

As to rapidity of study: This is always an arguable factor as
each student varies in their interest and receptivity. It was
observed in the progress of the study of the SD study group in
Malibu ULT Study Group that we might read only a paragraph or a
page one session, and in others we would read several pages -- it
depended on the actual interest in what HPB was teaching or
narrating.

Early in our joint study several students decided to set down
cross-references to similar or illuminating statements that HPB
made in ISIS, VOICE, ARTICLES by her. This shows how coherent
is the information that Theosophy offers.

-----------------------------------------

I think all these are valuable tools which older students have
left in print for our use.

But using those alone is only reviewing that which others have
worked to assist us with. Each of us needs to build on those
foundations and add our own work, study, and effort to prove to
ourselves such validity as we may draw from our own
investigation.

No one can ever PROVE anything to another. But a group of
friends and co-students working together can always keep fresh
and living the study of Nature -- which is THEOSOPHY.

Best wishes,

Dal

Friends,

It has always seemed to me there is a resurgence of "umph" in the
world (at
least in the northern hemisphere and on BN) after the US labor
day weekend.
Visitation rates to the site pick up and focus resumes. So this
seems a
fitting time to be finished the introduction to the SD and near
page 1.

As to the material, Peter, I think you (and Dallas) are right
that we should
be looking at the full context and not just the quotes. We have
had
enormous value from some of the quotes and it has been the
summer, but still
you are right.
