Dear Bruce:

Seems to me that in the period when you need / desire to rest and
reflect, In theosophy we would call that a cause that emanates
from Kama-Manas, the embodied consciousness that uses the brain
as its main tool -- and that brain can get overloaded with the
constant conflict it wages as a PERSONAL and SELFISH element
against its "brother" the Buddhi-Manas.
Our main problem is that when we say "We" we generally associate
ourselves with this temporary personality -- Theosophy of course
does the reverse, as it considers the INDIVIDUALITY ( the Higher
Self and the Higher Ego) to be permanent and the lower self we
use and work through to be only temporary.
Take the example of a pupil going daily to school.-- he sleeps
overnight. And when he awakes he has a pretty good memory of what
duties he is expected to perform. Our case is a little different
: Our waking memories do not include a memory of name and work
done in a previous incarnation (usually) although some do have
such recollections -- but, they are rare.
What we do have is an urge to live and to progress and to learn
what we are able to acquire. We know that SOMEWHERE WITHIN we
are sure we are OURSELVES. But this SELF has no "name," nor its
particular actions and experiences are only available to us as
CONSCIENCE and the ABILITY to FIND OUT.
If you have a copy of THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY (or you can access the
text through BLAVATSKY NET) you will find that H.P.B. devotes
many valuable pages to showing us how this distinction arises and
why there is any "conflict."

For example you will find much explained and defined in HUMAN
PSYCHOLOGY and CONSCIOUSNESS for about 100 pages, starting with
the table given on pp. 91-2 then to pp 135-6, and finally on
pp. 175-6.

You will find that Theosophical psychology tallies pretty well
with modern psychology if one uses the 7 human and cosmic
principles to fill in the gaps where our modern investigations
have not yet arrived at precise definitions. ( see also S.D. II
569-602; S.D. I 156-7, 181-2) I think you will be rewarded.
There is valuable information to exchange between the two.
But one must remember that THEOSOPHY is very ancient as compared
with the 2 / 300 years that have elapsed since modern psychology
has begun investigating, the muddle of human minds, feelings,
thoughts, emotions, desires, and finally the concept of KARMA
where one lives in an ever sensitive and totally ALIVE world,
and, where all our choices affect others nearby or far away, as a
result we ought to be aware that we live in a LIVE world, where
all our effort of investigating, the muddle of human
psycho-mental leaves still very much in the dark.
What a world of difference it would make if psychologist
investigated what THEOSOPHY had to say about the human situation!
The separation of the FEELING-EMOTION part of our nature from the
MENTAL-THOUGHT part is so very important and as a beginning would
go a long way to solving many puzzles.
Best wishes,
Dallas
PS	And get to the KEY TO THEOSOPHY, and really study it
carefully. See if it gives you a fresh line and point of view
from which to view ourselves. I found it did a lot for me.

Subject: Theos-World Reflection

Apart from when we are "full on" there are times when we need to
rest and
reflect.

"When you enter in upon reflection, do you speak and command, or
do you
listen? If we grimace and twist and writhe during said reflection
it may be
beneficial for us do to so, but it cannot be said that this is
pure
reflection, observing clearly upon recall. Equally, if we are
inclined to
rehash the more savored moments, these too may have their place
as inner
recreation, but it cannot be said that this is proper reflection
either.

Are you beginning to understand? If there are to be certain
mineral
constituents necessary to one's well-being, there are also provis
ions
afforded behaviorally which are of equal importance."
