The solution is simple:

1) If at all possible, use a newsreader OTHER than Outlook (Pegasus
makes Outlook look sick, at least as far as email capabilities go, and
is free).

2) NEVER open ANY attachment unless you are expecting it in advance. If
you are very familiar with the way file associations work, known picture
formats might be OK, but note that often viruses use a picture format as
an intermediate extension, nakedgirl.jpg.gh or something like that,
where ".gh" is a (fictional) undocumented extension for a Windows
executable (there are a number of REAL undocumented extensions for
Windows executables; I just don't have the ones I know at hand, and
there are several which are STILL undocumented).
