"Cautious about dating his [KH's] visit" to the Golden Temple

Koot Hoomi wrote to Mr. Sinnett:

“Amrita Saras, Oct. 29 [1880].
My Dear Brother,
. . . I determined to emerge from the seclusion of
many years and spend some time with her [HPB] to
comfort her as well as I could. . . . I had come for a
few days, but now find that I myself cannot endure for
any length of time the stifling magnetism even of my
own countrymen. I have seen some of our proud old
Sikhs drunk and staggering over the marble pavement of
their sacred Temple. . . . I turn my face homeward
to-morrow. . . .”

About this letter and KH’s presence in Amritsar in
late October, 1880, Steven Stubbs has made several
comments:

“. . . We must expect that some inconsistencies will
have been deliberately introduced into the evidence to
throw us off scent. This will be true no matter who
they turn out to be.”

“For that reason, I think we should be cautious about
assuming that the date of a mahatma letter saying KH
went to Amritsar allows us to put him there at that
exact time. I do not doubt that he went there, but his
visit very likely was months before the letter was
written. …”

“I do not doubt for an instant that KH visited
Amritsar if he says he did. I would suggest being
cautious about dating his visit if, as I suspect, he
did not want to make his identity too plain to the
profane world. It does appear that he did wish to keep
his worldly identity private (and who could blame
him?) so one would expect that he would have exercised
some caution there. I am not saying this DID
happen, but that we should consider the possibility. …”

“Another question has to do with when NKC [Koot
Hoomi??] was in Amritsar. Is there evidence
this journey was for sure a recent experience, or
might it have taken place some time before 1880?”

Steve, I am somewhat puzzled by your statements
especially by this sentence:

“I would suggest being cautious about dating his visit
if, as I suspect, he did not want to make his identity
too plain to the profane world.”

Steve, let’s think this through, okay?

How would correctly dating his letter Oct. 29, 1880
and actually being at Amritsar on that date. . . how
would any of that make “his identity too plain to the
profane world”?

First of all, the letter was written to only one
person --- A.P. Sinnett. Apparently Sinnett received
this letter on or about Nov. 5. KH would have
already left Amritsar and been elsewhere on Nov. 5.
What could Mr. Sinnett have discovered about KH’s true
identity ???? Even if Mr. Sinnett had decided to
immediately go to Amritsar, what is there in the
letter in question that would lead Mr. Sinnett to
discover KH’s real identity once he got to Amritsar
and the Golden Temple? Hundreds of persons in turbans
and robes had been at the Golden Temple on a daily
basis. So if KH was really at the Golden Temple on
or about Oct. 29, 1880, what is there that would have
given away his identity to the profane world --- or
to Mr. Sinnett??

If you accept the existence of KH and also accept that
he was at the Golden Temple, then I see no good reason
to assume that KH must have changed the date of that
visit to throw the profane world off from finding his
true identity. Your reasoning on this does not hold
up under closer analysis.
