Internet's Effect on "Spiritual" Organizations

One thing that is obvious is that many older organizations which are used to contain all adverse info from reaching its followers, try every means to suppress the followers accessing the info that is available on the Internet. Usually it is done through the informal network -- in the "catholic" type of setup where the "Pope" or its equivalent discourages the followers from participating and perhaps even accessing info on the internet. Anyone who is perceptive enough and who follows the discussions on maillists and usenet groups can easily discern this and one does not need to be a brain surgeon to do it. On occasion, the directive or the "advise" to the followers is more direct. In either case, of course most of the mindless "sheep" follow the advise because of either the fear of being thrown out of the "spiritual" organization and the consequential fear of loss of spiritual progress in this life or in future life or lives or fear of other consequences of the reaction from the organizational setup or fear of either retribution or external progress being impeded by such independence of listening to the organizationally correct behaviour.
