*** Kids head to see Dalai Lama

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A high school trip to hear the Dalai Lama
discuss nonviolence is being funded with private donations after
Republican lawmakers complained public funding would violate the
separation of church and state. The student trip Monday to Portland,
Ore., had been planned for more than a year but drew complaints this
month from seven state legislators who said public funding of the
trip revealed a bias against Christianity in the schools. The
students are participating in Pathways to Peace, a youth summit.
Organizers and school officials said the Dalai Lama's three-day
visit to Portland is part of his decades-long effort to promote
peace and is not religious in nature. The cost is being covered by
at least eight donors, including state Transportation Commissioner
Ed Barnes.
