That's probably true about Richard Gere. But I remember a comment in
the Dalai Lama's autobiography which was not so pacifist. It referred to
the Iranian revolution, and the taking of the American hostages. The Dalai
Lama said we were acting too weak, and proposed this action:

Bring every available airplane to fly over Tehran, and darken the skies
with printed flyers. The flyers would be a warning and ultimatum: Release
the prisoners within 24 hours, or all these planes would return with bombs,
and Tehran would be erased.
