Aren't we using our modern way of life along with our modern
technology to impune the normal way of life in HPB's time?

What was the average person drinking in those days? They didn't know
about germs in those days. They did know that drinking plain water
could be fatal. They did not have water works that laced their water
with chlorine to kill the naturally occuring germs and bacteria. They
did know that if they diluted their water with half and half wine or
beer, that would make it safe to drink.

That is why they are called "spirits", because they thought that there
was a good spirit in beer and wine that prevented people from getting
sick.

They mixed the water half and half with wine for the children to
drink, to help keep the children safe from diesase.

Now that we have safe drinking water, we look down on people from the
past, and accuse them of being drunkards, only because we evidently do
not know why they put chlorine in the water here.

In more primitive parts of the world, people still catch diseases and
die from drinking contaminated water.
