Dear Gopi:

I do not recollect exactly what you are looking for.. It is a
god idea to keep your own note-book and record passages under
subject headings that might be useful for the future. I make
myself do this all the time.

S D I 113 has some good statements on the ONE

If I recall correctly, there is a statement made ( I cannot
locate it just now) that the "SUNDERING OF THE ONE" (producing
differentiation ( DUALITY -- TWO ) was the first "evil."

But it was also explained that this division into DUALITY was
essential for evolution and the development of mind.

But this does not mean placing "evil" is a single form. Neither
it, nor "Good," can be personified.

In other words there is no PERSONAL GOD and no PERSONAL DEVIL.
Nor is it possible to put "Good" into a single form.

Both of these are everywhere. Monads fill the boundless void.
They are ATMA-BUDDHI, always combined and neutralizing each
other.

Yet they are also the fundamentals of LIVING NATURE and are
present everywhere.

Think of the MONAD: ATMA and BUDDHI, combined and intertwined
with MIND as the middle and impartial observer and actor, ever in
between. In the case of the 3 GUNAS that form Sri Krishna's
"lower nature," you have SATTVA ( spiritual purity ), RAJAS
(mind and emotions ), and TAMAS (inertia, ignorance and material
forms ). [ see BHAGAVAD GITA ( Sri Krishna) Chapters 14 and
17 ).

What are they ?

ATMA = purity and SPIRITUAL PERFECTION = Universal primeval
essence.

BUDDHI = Primordial pure MATTER [ Suddha-Sattwa -- see T.
Glos. p. 311 ] -- but MATTER IS FORM and is in contrast with
SPIRIT that has NO FORM.

Yet, for BUDDHI to be everywhere and in all Monads, it also has
to be PURE, and have NO FORM such as we can conceive of. It is
also called MAHA-BUDDHI, MULAPRAKRITI (Root Matter )

As far as I can understand, the LAWS of the UNIVERSE (or NATURE)
are universal. They are equal-handed and the same for all. They
are the creators of TIME out of ETERNITY or DURATION. They are
the time-markers of KARMA. [ see S D II 68 -70 ]

MIND	Humanity is distinguished by the possession of independently
the power to CREATE by MIND CHOICE. In effect it is KRIASAKTI.
(but the average translations and renderings of KRIASAKTI are
inadequate.[ the various SHAKTIS are described in S D I pp.
292-3 ]

Mankind BEING ENDOWED (by the Gnyanis, or Dhyanis -- (S D I
570 - 575) with INDEPENDENCE OF MIND, and also being placed as
Mind-beings, between the two extremes of BUDDHI ( PURE WISDOM
and UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCE, VIRTUE and UNIVERSALITY ) and its
opposite: KAMA ( Desire, passion, irrationality, folly,
ignorance, selfishness, and viciousness) Mind is split and we
have Buddhi-Manas and Kama-Manas.

The balance between the two aspects is decided on by the
independent CHOOSER, the WITNESS, the MENTAL BEING that we are.
Where does this independence come from? It comes from the
ABSOLUTE in final resolution. This makes the Universal MONAD:
ATMA and BUDDHI and MANAS.

MANAS holds always the middle position. ( see KEY TO THEOSOPHY
(HPB) p. 176 ).

Incidentally the Spiritual origin of Kama is KAMADEVA. (see T.
Glos., pp. 170-1). It is only in a MAN, who chooses to be
perverse, that Kama becomes the Mara -- the Destroyer, the
creator of ILLUSION. But then Maya cannot be personified either.

We have to se we are dealing with metaphysical as well as
spiritual and mental forces.

The abuse of Nature and the violation of her Laws produces
,monstrous effects and the "psychic" plane becomes infested with
these mind-creations (or rather distortions made by the influence
of Kama (vice).

The relation between virtue and vice is said to be: "the
exaggeration of a virtue creates a vice." If the system is
balanced, by the commanding MIND, then harmony prevails.

KARMA is the force Nature exerts on one who chooses wrongly (who
breaks or violates her laws) -- so Nature in her efforts to mend
discord and pain and sorrow, and to restore harmony and also
teach the lesson of the obligation to become wise, and
Self-disciplined, offering generous help to all, and protection
to the weak and the needy. Nature produces "circumstances" and
"accidents" in a man's life with the object of causing him to ask
: WHY ME ?

We, each of us, have to do this work of FINDING OUT what fault we
allowed to happen in our past.

The cure for the selfishness and isolation of EVIL is to
deliberately do good charitable and noble deed, thoughts and
words. When challenged with TRUTH the evil doer ought to
immediately agree to rectify any harm done. It is a debt owed to
the victims and their families.

If evil is further concealed, it is compounded.

Love and brotherhood are the panacea, but they have to be
actively used, not just thought of or debated.

Best wishes,

Dallas

Subject: Evil

Dear Dallas,

Somehow, a year or so ago I understood HPB to have said about
Evil as
follows. This is in my own words, I am terrible at quoting others
and I
have to understand ultimately in my words:

When separation (from Absolute and so on) started to occur all
the way to
the crystallization in to the physical world, there has been
tremendous
resistance from separation. This ultimate Love showed up in
different
ways at different levels. I don't want to go into the
descriptions of
Dhyan Chowhans and so on. Any way, this resistance to creation in
the
physical world appears as Evil.

When I understood it that way it gave me very healthy compassion
towards
Evil. That allows me to forgive Evil in me too!

Please comment.

Thanks
Gopi
