Re: Occult Principles Where are they? How do we find them ?

Friday, January 04, 2002

Dear Friends:

I would say that the essence of Occultism is a realization of
theoretical as well as practical brotherhood -- the brotherhood
of all as well as each component element of life involved in the
vast Universe.

As soon as some occult rule or "secret of Nature" becomes clear,
it ceases to be "occult."

Hence the extreme care used by the Adepts in exposing the route
to the discovery of such "secrets." Chemistry, physics,
engineering, mathematics, and other sciences are closely
monitored and discoveries that could result in increasing tyranny
of the poor and the weak are kept SECRET.

Example: Can any one tell us what FIRE, or ELECTRICITY is? The
effects of its presence are well described. But WHAT IS IT ?

As I understand it, the "THREE FUNDAMENTALS" (S D I 14-19)
cover this from the theoretical view point and have direct
implications in the practical and every-day life of all.

The whole direction of the THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT is to draw
attention to the force of compassion, generosity, help and
assistance -- in short to BROTHERHOOD. This take it out of the
realm of things and substance into the "subjective" plane of
responsibility for providing dangerous information to potential
tyrants. It is the old difference between the "Eye" and the
"Heart" doctrines.

This is to make those who study, aware of the potentials for
increased sorrow and woe that can be inflicted by the
"knowledgeable" on those who are "ignorant" for the moment. It
is the development of the common power we all possess in
potential: the innate force of MORAL POWER and a cognition of
the force of MOTIVE that are needed now.

If one then looks at S D I 157; II 596 one begins to discover
the value of the division of the manifested Universe into 7
equally interactive and responsible portions. The double
interlaced triangles, also known as "Solomon's Seal" illustrates
this symbolically. portions. The double interlaced triangles,
also known as symbol of the Universe the 7 in ONE reveals the
duality (2 triangles) of PURITY -- SPIRIT, and IMPURITY --
MATTER. Of course these are relative, as they come from the same
one impartite SOURCE.

Their duality dates from the time of the "sundering of the ONE."
Manifestation induces DUALITY, and THREENESS -- from thence to
FOUR, and the sum of all is TEN.

Each is triple and corresponds t the great "qualities 00 the
GUNAS-- as spoken of the B Gita

Best wishes,

Dallas

Subject: [bn-basic] "No two are agreed upon any fundamental
occult principles. . . . "

In the following passages from THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY,
H.P. Blavatsky makes some astute observations that are
still true and relevant today (maybe even more so!). I
would suggest that students of her writings might take
to heart the major points she offers for our
consideration.

"While two-thirds of civilized society ridicule the
mere notion that there is anything in Theosophy,
Occultism, Spiritualism, or in the Kabala, the other
third is composed of the most heterogeneous and
opposite elements. Some believe in the mystical, and
even in the supernatural (!), but each believes in his
own way. Others will rush single-handed into the study
of the Kabala, Psychism, Mesmerism, Spiritualism, or
some form or another of Mysticism. Result: no two men
think alike, no two are agreed upon any fundamental
occult principles, though many are those who claim for
themselves the ultima thule of knowledge, and would
make outsiders believe that they are full-blown
adepts. Not only is there no scientific and accurate
knowledge of Occultism accessible in the West -- not
even of true astrology, the only branch of Occultism
which, in its exoteric teachings, has definite laws
and a definite system -- but no one has any idea of
what real Occultism means. Some limit ancient wisdom
to the Kabala and the Jewish Zohar, which each
interprets in his own way according to the dead-letter
of the Rabbinical methods. Others regard Swedenborg or
Boehme as the ultimate expression of the highest
wisdom; while others again see in mesmerism the great
secret of ancient magic. One and all of those who put
their theory into practice are rapidly drifting,
through ignorance, into black magic. Happy are those
who escape from it, as they have neither test nor
criterion by which they can distinguish between the
true and the false. . . . A portion of the true
sciences is better than a mass of undigested and
misunderstood learning. An ounce of gold is worth a
ton of dust." THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY, Section 2.

What do you believe are Mme. Blavatsky's major
observations in these quoted passages above and what
is the relevance of these points as one seriously
studies Theosophy and related subjects?

Daniel
