Dear Odette:

Re: Eve (a female) is said to be made from Adam's rib?

How did Adam (a male) get there first ?

Allow me to reflect first on the implications of the "First
Fundamental."

2 out of 1

And, as an aside, is not the symbolical "Egg of Brahma" an
anthropomorphization of the symbol of the TWO interlaced triangles
within the circle of the "Serpent of Eternity?" A correspondence in
every element is to be seen in comparing them. [ We could well start
with reading the extracts from the OCCULT CATECHISM -- S D I p. 9,
11, 120. ]

The question of duality arising out of singularity at the very dawn,
(pre-dawn ? -- in the Unmanifested LOGOS) of manifestation has our
attention. In S D II p. 176 (top), II 578, and THEOSOPHICAL
GLOSSARY p. 171, we find the verses from the RIG-VEDA that was marked
on S D I 26 by a series of * * * * * * * * * "Desire
first arose in It, which was the primal germ of mind; and which Sages
searching with their intellect, have discovered [ in their heart ] to
be the bond which connects Entity with non-Entity," [or Manas with
pure Atma-Buddhi.] ( a slightly different version is in THEOSOPHICAL
GLOSSARY p. 171.

We find in the S D I 234, the following: "But the "innumerable
incarnations of Spirit." and "the ceaseless pulse and current of
desire " refer, the first one, to our doctrine of Karmic and cyclic
rebirths, the second--to EROS, not the later god of material,
physiological love, but to the divine desire in the gods, [Kamadeva
?] as well as in all nature, to create and give life to Beings. This,
the Rays of the one "dark," because invisible and incomprehensible,
FLAME could achieve only by themselves descending into matter..."
[ Fohat is also called Eros or universal, impersonal, divine love --
S D I 119; II 65. ]

Sex pertains to body alone and to Karma.

As far as I have found out, the SPIRIT and the individual SOUL in
every human is not sexed. (see S D I 18, 222 ; II 167, 58, 254,
247, 275.).

Contrast and Resolution

So the introduction of bipolarity has something to do with the
evolutionary process, perhaps starting with the UNIVERSAL MONAD. (
see S D II 167 (bottom) relates to development of the Mind-faculty.
But still we need to ask why that is necessary? There has to be a
very deep reason.)

Bridge -- Mind -- Fohat -- Energy -- Force

Does it relate to Fohat, conscious occult electricity, and LIFE
currents [ S D I 49, 145, 604, S D II 272, ]. Fohat forms the
"bridge" between "SPIRIT" and "Matter." ( S D I 16). And is
therefore related to the MIND. As it is "cosmic energy" and is guided
by universal intelligence ( S D I 328, 493; II 330), it has always
existed. It impresses thought on substance as the imagination, and,
as it is the force that accompanies all ideation (S D I 16, 85,
110-11; II 649fn.) In this sense, it impresses substance with the
Karmic quality of our choices, be they good or bad.

Universal CONSCIOUSNESS and Individual Consciousness

It is said that the "Sundering of the ONE" is both the continuing (as
Karma) and a new "beginning" in Kosmos, of the evolutionary
experience; and it provides for the mysterious "germ" of MIND. It is
the free and independent element of SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS, or, that which
links the polar extremes of SPIRIT and MATTER in every MONAD. In one
sense, this makes of every MIND a free and independent "rebel." (S D
I 103, II 93-5, 246-8, 585, ) The "Divine Rebels" are the Men of
Mind Completely Perfects, from Manvantaras of the past. They are the
"saviours of mankind" [ S D II 103, 164, 248.] They represent the
true independence of universal WISDOM embodied in the perfected human
Universally Conscious INTELLIGENCE.

Pure Spirit is tamasic -- inactive.

SPIRIT implies PERFECTION (see Paranishpanna, S D I 42) in
everything and therefore the phrase used in the S D II p. 103
(middle) is "...the morbid inactivity of pure spirit..." and, on
S D II p. 489: "...pure quiescent Spirit..." (just below middle of
page).

This is a symbol, partially explained exoterically in the various
Hindu scriptures. But even without those, students of Theosophy,
self-trained in attention, and vigilant as to meanings, might start to
ask themselves (using what knowledge they already have, and applying
the laws of analogy and correspondence as far as they are able) : --
How is a perfect knowledge of SPIRIT to be acquired in a limited form
of substance? Does this acquirement liberate the monads and transform
them into spiritual units now all consciously united ?

Symbol of the Egg with 2 centers

The EGG OF BRAHMA (HIRANYAGARBHA) shows Brahma slumbering. It is a
period of "night," of DARKNESS ( see S D II 59, 95, 489, )

He lies, FOUR HEADED, within an "Egg" (an OVAL -- symbol of
everlasting LIFE) from which streams a radiance out, unlimited to
pervade all Space.

1. Along with Brahma is his "bed" -- the WISE Serpent:
Sesha-Ananta, or unlimited Time (Duration, and cycles) whose
seven-headed canopy shades him, and,

2. certain objects -- a lotah (water vase) filled with water, a
platter (with rice or food), sometimes a rolled-up scroll and pen,
Brahma's sandals lie facing outward at the center on the side of the
"bed." Then,

3. Brahma's form is clothed, and adorned with various symbolical
jewels, etc....

We ought to take note of those and ask ourselves how they happen to be
placed there.
What do they imply as represented by the chosen symbols?

It then is a question of :

1. Where and when did Brahma originate? Why 4 Heads ?

2. How did he acquire a Form? Why does it resemble a human male
form?

3. What did Brahma do before the "slumber?

4. What is the slumber for?

5. What determines its beginning, length and ending?

6. When does Brahma awake? ( Is this the reincarnation of the
Kosmos, a Sun, an Earth, a human being? Does the "Mind" pass through,
and, is it aware of various states and conditions other than
"wakefulness ?" )

7. Then, what does HE do ? [ Possibly this is covered on S D II
167 ] Is it not the ONE RAY INTENSIFIED that is implied in the symbol
of the rib (near the HEART) giving the physical, material basis for
the "female," who thereafter would be endlessly productive of FORMS ?
She, the Universal Mother, is wise, and "Intuition" is a sign of her
retentive faculty and the use of that wisdom in the universal tender
care for all being ?

Process of incarnation of Mind into material forms.

Described in SECRET DOCTRINE II 286-8, 289-90. Man's, astral (and
physical) form the primitive source of all future forms (animals)
including apes and monkeys.

These are some of the ideas and references to be found on this in The
SECRET DOCTRINE .

More can be turned up under Female, Androgyne, Poles, Duality, Male,
and finally, we are given a hint of the duality of the "principle"
represented by Eve -- the Mind that incarnates as virtue and
brotherhood in S D II 214.

Best wishes,

Dallas

Subject: [bn-study] Re Eve true symbolical meaning?

Peter:
Hello

Thank for this illuminating explanation which seems correct to me;
just a small point. Having restored dear Eve's reputation and high
place in the scheme of things, how does it tally with the other fact
(?) that she was born out of Adam's rib?
I know that HPB tells us in the SD that this symbolises the Androgyne
Adam becoming bi-sexual and physical (with a bone structure)in the
course of time, yet he was there first ?
Regards
Odette
