Re: Date of establishment (birth ?) of the

THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY 1875, New York

Dear Gabriella:

The process of "birth" of the original THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY in
America is recorded as follows:

[see BLAVATSKY: Collected Works (TPH), Vol. 1, pp. LVIII-IV, 122,
123, ...;
[ see also PATH X , p. 55 ]

-------------------------------------------

Sept 7th 1875	[ 1st Preliminary proposal ]

H P B wrote that she, upon the Masters' bidding wrote the suggestion
to form a Society on a slip of paper and passed it to Mr. Judge to
pass on to Col. Olcott.

The Meeting was then called to order by Mr. Judge, and he proposed
Col. Olcott to the Chair. Col. Olcott took the Chair. After some
discussion, it was Resolved that a 2nd meeting be called Sept. 8th
1875 [ In O D L -- the original Diaries having been lost -- Col.
Olcott recalls this event somewhat differently -- he claims he
originated thee idea of forming a Society. But this does not appear
to have been the actual case, if one reads H P B's notes of July 6th
1875, p. 94, BLAVATSKY: Collected Works (TPH); and, in Vol. I, p. 73
bottom ]

------------------------------

Sept 8th 1875	[ 2nd Preliminary Meeting ]

Mr. Judge called the Meeting to order and proposed Col., Olcott to the
chair. Col. Olcott took the Chair. The Minutes of the first meeting
held on Sept. 8th 1875 show that Col. Olcott was asked to take the
Chair and that Mr. Judge act as Secretary for the meeting; 16 persons
were present and handed in their names as founders of the new Society;
a committee of three was to draft a Constitution and Bylaws; and that
the next meeting be called on Sept. 13 1975 at 8 pm.

--------------------------------------------

Sept. 13 1875	[ NAME: The THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY adopted ]

The name The THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY for the new Society was chosen.

---------------------------------

October 16 1875	[ Bylaws discussed ]

Meeting of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY held. Bylaws discussed..

-----------------------------------

October 30th 1875	[ Bylaws adopted. Officers elected. ]

By-laws discussed and final draft adopted. Meeting place of the
Society was to be Mott Memorial Hall at 64 Madison Ave. New York;
Officers elected. Col. Olcott as President; Mme. Blavatsky as
Corresponding Secretary; Mr. W. Q. Judge as Counsel and a Secretary
and Treasurer were elected.

---------------------------------------------

November 17 1975	[ INAUGURAL ADDRESS given by Col. Olcott, President ]

Col. Olcott delivers the INAUGURAL ADDRESS of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
at Mott Memorial Hall at 64 Madison Ave. New York. H P B present.

==========================

This is a summary taken from Vol. I of BLAVATSKY: Collected Works
(TPH) I do not know how to select any particular one of these dates
as a "birth" date.

The NAME was selected on the 13th of September 1875.

The Public address at INAUGURATION was of course Nov. 17th 1875.

Best wishes,

Dallas
