Two points

Bart: The whole reason why the Republican Party bosses tried to push W
on
the American public was to reduce the influence of the Religious Right
on the Republican party.

Steve: That's news to me. I thought when he moved his mouth they pulled
the string.

Who exactly are these "Republican Party bosses" you are speaking of?
Congressional leaders? State party leadership? Corporate gift givers?
Lobbyists? My political experience is that the entire political process
is an uncertain alliance of factions that momentarily come together to
select candidates but otherwise are fighting each other for influence.
Steve: As for people who want ideas not completely identical to their own

That reminds me of a seldom sung verse of Woodie Guthries "This Land is
Your Land" which goes something like:

As I was walking
I saw a sign there
And on one side it said "no tresspassing"
But on the other side it said nothing
That side was made for you and me
