I never did see the connection before, but there is a story that 
Blavatsky considered going to New Orleans to study Voodoo, but that 
Morya appeared in a vision or something and told her not to. Given 
that Randolph and his successor had some African ancestry, it occurs 
to me her admiration for them may have been part of the incentive,
