Unfortunately for him, they did not agree with him; he had severe stomach pains after he turned 40. He experimented, eliminating foods that, when eaten, resulted in pain, which ended up eliminating most of the meat in his diet. He DID, however, frequently have lapses, which resulted in the return of the pain. According to the chef who was his personal cook in Hamburg during the late 30's, his favorite dish was stuffed squab.
