a weekend away....should've been two

G'day List,

Firstly, it is good to see a new voice (or an old
voice returning) on this list. Erica, thank you for
your words and please keep it up.

I journeyed to a place called Barrington Tops over the
weekend, a place where the old meets the new. There
you can find vegetation that dates back to the
dinosaurs. Standing in it you can really feel as
though an enlarged reptile was about to jump out from
behind a Nothofagus tree. I even had the pleasure of
sitting and having lunch on a tree fern that was over
a thousand years old - a legacy of venturing off the
track and exploring the unknown. I also was fortunate
enough to spot a Pademelon, Bandicoot and a Potoroo -
all of whom I have never seen before. So that was
trees from the Antarctic, and marsupials from beyond
placentals - all that was needed was a monotreme to be
found and it would have been Antipodean indeed!!!

But then languishing from this natural museum into the
big modern world of fast cars, aeroplanes and the
internet, you really do gain a very good perspective
on the world and its current predicament. Yes we
should be very concerned about the state of the world
and the impending apocalypse on the Iraqi people. And
yes we should also be concerned about the state of the
environment and the havoc we are daily wrecking upon
it. But standing amongst life that has gone through
thick and thin over the last 100 million years (as
dated by modern science - I am sure some theosophists
would disagree) a sense of eerie calm can descend over
one. We might obliterate our physical selves in one
act of wanton ignorance but, nevertheless, evolution
continues. It is a ceaseless force and no number of
George Bush's can ever, ever stop it. War or no,
environmental destruction or no, you will never change
the world by screaming at 177 people on theos-talk.
Like *they* say, if you want to make the world a
happier place, start by smiling. And after the weekend
I've just had, I have never had a bigger smile on my
face.
