There are a number of possible reasons, including the Hollywood
Blacklist, the House Unamerican Activities Commitee, Senator Joe
McCarthy, the Nixon enemies list, the Vietnam War, the pursuit of
aniel Elllsberg, the railroading of Alger Hiss, the Watergate
breakin, the sbsequent coverup, the last phase of the Jim Crow era,
Enron, Worldcomm, the Imclone scandal, deliberate use of chemical,
biologica;, and buclear weapons on US citizens and those of other
countries, Pol Pot, the murder of Salvator Allende, the effort to
illegally bring down the democratically elected government of
Nicaraugua, environmental destruction in Central America, global
warming, aic rain, extinvtion of millions of species, millions of
babies in Iraq killed by US sanctions, and most recently shenanigans
in Florida and a projected war in Iraq for the enrichment of afew
private individuals. That is a greatly bbreviated list.

You are right, though, that the joke is not funny.
