Re VOICE OF THE SILENCE

In considering your question and the discussion, may I offer the
following line of thought ?

We can debate after the passage of 100 years +/- the alterations to the
form of the published VOICE OF THE SILENCE. We cannot alter those. But
some of the observations seem to delve, as guess work, into the nature
of the motives of the changes made.

I think Leon (Lenny) has made some good observations and so have you and
Peter.

Is it not an example of how several devoted students pool their views?
This is brotherhood (to me) in action and demonstrates no authority or
subservience to any opinion.

The main point is the conveyance of meaning.

Is that altered? I do not mean the "Eye Doctrine." I mean the HEART
DOCTRINE.

Take just the first couple of pages,

VOICE OF THE SILENCE [ see LIGHT ON THE PATH p. 22 ]

Who are "those ignorant of the lower Iddhis?
Why was Pali instead of Sanskrit chosen in this case?
[see Vahan II 4, col. 2 top; S D I 97fn; Glos 298; ]
Who are they, and why are they to be "instructed?"
What are the Iddhis?
What are the "lower" Iddhis?
What are the "higher" Iddhis?
What is their importance?

Who is Nada?
Why does "he" have a "voice?"
If it is a "Soundless sound" then what kind of ears are needed if any?
Astral, psychic, spiritual ?
What is the importance of "comprehending" it ?
Who or what in us benefits?

If DHARANA is "intense and perfect concentration, of the mind upon some
one interior object" -- abstract from the external Universe and senses,"
How is it to be described and what use is it?

How is that developed? Does Patanjali help?

How does one become "indifferent to objects of perception?"
Why is that necessary?

What is the "Rajah of the Senses" (p. 2...) ?
Why is he" called the "Thought-Producer?" ?
How is "illusion" awakened ?
Who or what in us can be deluded?

"The Mind is the great Slayer of the Real." Whose mind?
Is it the "Lower" or the "Higher" Mind?
Who or what in us rules and directs the Mind?

"Lee the Disciple slay the Slayer."
Who is the "disciple" in us?
How is the "Slayer" to be destroyed? Mentally? How?
Then what happens to the Mind ? Is it transformed? Eliminated?

Here, I have in writing, modified the "form" of the text --and
hopefully have not modified the MEANING -- and asked questions that
appear important to me for my comprehension. Others seeing those may be
able to help.

Others may have other orders of importance.

Or secure different meanings for such an introduction to the 76 pages
that follow.

One can spend years trying to get "at the bottom" of this book.

It is one of ethical practices used by Lanoos (disciples) to attain
spiritual enlightenment and (if I understand it right) awaken the
BUDDHI-MANAS dormant in themselves, as I see it. It is a search for and
a verification of the HEART DOCTRINE.

I think the VOICE OF THE SILENCE gives a message tuned to the nature of
the inquirer's mind and desire. If so, it responds to the way and
method of our approach. If so, we ought to spend a good deal of time
investigating our capacities, natures, expectations and motives -- no?

And so on.

This is what interests me for years. The rest is time-consuming.
Circumlocutory.

Best wishes,

Dallas

Subject: Dallas, please consider Peter M.'s Relevant Question

Dallas, please consider & give us your answer to Peter M.'s relevant
question:

Peter wrote in his post to Leon:

"As a 'by the way', it is not clear to me that
Judge did carry out all the alterations to THE VOICE.
For prior to Judge's 1893 edition, there was a
London edition published in 1892, after HPB had died,
and probably done by G.R. Mead. This earlier edition
contains all the alterations that Daniel mentioned in his recent
post. Perhaps Judge did not realise that changes had
been made to it when it passed through his hands - who knows.
But I wonder, will you and ceertain others still be happy
with the alterations made to THE VOICE if it turns out
to be altered by Mead and possibly Besant rather than by Judge?"

I highlight the question again:

". . . I wonder, will you [Leon] and ceertain others still be happy
with the alterations made to THE VOICE if it turns out
to be altered by Mead and possibly Besant rather than by Judge?"

Dallas, what if this edition of the VOICE "turns out
to be altered by Mead and possibly Besant rather than by Judge",
does that change in any way your current position about the Judge
edition of the VOICE???

Daniel
