Dear M:

You ( and I) and anyone else will only be able to distinguish between
HPB and Masters' teachings of THEOSOPHY by ourselves making a thorough
study of their philosophy as found in the ORIGINAL WRITINGS.

I look on all other writings as something to be measured up to the
ORIGINALS. 

I take nothing for granted.

Their claim is that THEOSOPHY is ancient and conveys both history as
well as the necessary texts and rules of occultism and esotericism. 

They start with the ABSOLUTE ALL -- SPIRIT and then explain why
manifestation and evolution in all planes is essential so that all the
many "parts" of the ABSOLUTENESS involved in these two processes may of
their own will and effort obtain a mastery over the existing rules and
conditions.

They ask us to look into all sciences, philosophies and religions. 

They ask us to investigate our present situation, physically, morally,
psychically and mentally.

They are not able to do the work for us, nor can they endow us with
knowledge we have not earned. Their schools and its rules are far more
ancient than ours today and more comprehensive. Additionally they
include as a most important basis a very strict morality based on
impeccable brotherhood exercised by our choice and disciplined by our
will ALL THE TIME.

Joining a "society" whether of theosophists, or any other persuasion, is
unimportant, as the work has still to be done by us. In other words WE
HAVE TO FIT OURSELVES TO KNOW. And then we have to exercise extreme
humility and impersonality to the point of being apparently ignorant.

In LIGHT ON THE PATH (p. 4) we find the statement" And the power the
disciple shall covet is that which will make him appear as nothing in
the eyes of men." In my esteem this says it all.

You might ask why I write and put my name to it. It is because I try to
put the teachings forth primarily. And second, usually a "name" is
asked for. It is for this reason that I quote so much -- and use
strict logic in presenting ideas. If I advance an "opinion" I try to
label it, so as to warn readers to use their own ability to consider and
think things our independently. I am NO "authority." 

I do not wish to take away any of Dan's answer but felt you might like
to hear what Theosophy teaches on this subject .

You will fid that HPB has written a series of articles under the tile of
RAJA-YOGA. If you are interested these can be reprinted for you to
read.
