That is certainly true of Blavatsky, but there are still folks who think that
Keely discovered some sort of mysterious energy.

From the descriptions I have read, I suspect that he really thought he
had something, and used fakes to keep the money coming in until he could
come up with the real thing. Certainly, most of the investment money was
put into R&D rather than living the high life, which is not consistent
with someone who believed himself to be a total fraud. Of course, the
fact that it didn't work should give SOME people a clue. He is the
proverbial man who tried the thing that couldn't be done, and he
couldn't do it.
