I recall when the local government tried to ban Santeria animal sacrifice in Florida. The courts rightly used the principle that if an act can be performed for non-religious reasons, then it cannot be forbidden when done for religious purposes, and, since butchers were legal, animal sacrifice needed to be legal, as well.
