Who caused the split? Luther or the Pope?

But would it be alright to say that it's the Pope caused the split of the
Catholic church and has created English and Luteran churches? ;)
Yes, I believe that would be one valid conclusion.

After all, Luther's motive was not the split, but to cure "the church".

If the leaders of the church had not supported things like "Selling Dispensations" (paying your way into heaven) and the other things that Luther criticized in his "Theses" posted to the door at Wittenberg, then Luther would not have had to criticize the church.

So, by one view of the truth, Luther caused the split. But by another just as valid view of the truth, "The Church" caused the split, whether you blame it on the then-current-Pope, or on the college of cardinals who promoted their personal agendas within the church.

My opinion

P.S. Are you looking for a great gift for the spiritual someone on your
list? (Or for yourself?)

Look no further. http://www.spiritual-dvds-every-month.com/

I checked out one month's worth of DVDs and loved every minute. And I
really appreciated the fact that they didn't try to promote just one
point of view.
