Morten,
Just curious--

A book titled "THE VATICAN'S WOMEN" written by Paul Hofmann
(He was for 35 years a foreign correspondent for The New York Times )
http://www.americamagazine.org/BookReview.cfm?textID=2540&articletypeid=31&;
issueID=405
(It is about Pope Joan, Mother Teresa and also - Opus Dei)<<

Who was "Pope Joan?"
There is a theory that someone (sort of like Yentl) who was a woman who pretended to be a man, and rose through the ranks to become Pope. It is said that, because of the scandal (some people say she became pregnant while pope) that there is now a "Pope's Chair" so that someone reach up from below to test to see if the person is really a man. (The chair supposedly has a hole in it so that the person can test for testicles).

I don't think the name is actually significant. Joan is similar to John.

(Yentl is a cute movie ... read more about it at

Barbra Streisand played a Rabbi's daughter who, after her father's death, became a boy in order to study the Torah in more depth.)
