THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

Anand and Friends:

No more erroneous statement could be made as the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY would
not exist without the presence and writings of H P B .

Consider the information given below (at bottom is a chronology) from
actual documents.

Anand,

Take care with your statements. Theosophical Society was formed
in
New York, where the headquarters moved to after that is not important,
Theosophy encapsulates the world and humankind should encompass its
teachings. If Theosophy is to flourish and develop, such silly and
disagreeable statements from you have to stop. It does Theosophy no good at
all to continuously spout badness, ill-will and flawed interpretations It is

clear that you have to look within yourself and understand your own
processes before you attempt the bigger picture. I would urge you to reflect

on your own persona and agenda that it falls short of the aims of the
Theosophical Society.

Those new to TS or wish to join will shake there heads, and form the
impression that this is not the way for an organization to be, they will go
elsewhere and be lost to OUR movement. You have an obligation to TS to
promote the 3 aims, Sweeping statements from you have done nothing to
promote the cause of Universal Brotherhood, Understanding of your fellow
beings have fallen short of what is expected from you. It is a pity as the
good work that you do is lost in non-useful and time-wasting
diatribe. REFLECT, CONTEMPLATE, UNDERSTAND, OBSERVE, and LEARN.

We remain your affectionate friend,

Iain

Dallas,

You wrote
The original THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY never left New York.

Don't you know history or you are intentionally telling false
information. It is well known fact that both founders-Blavatsky and
Olcott- shifted Theosophical Society to Adyar, when they were alive.

Dallas Answers:

RECENT T. S. HISTORY
=====================

Let me say this in regard to the history of the T S and the E S.

It should be noted that the E S was a secret and private body of students
pledged directly to HPB (who assumed sole responsibility for it) and each of
its members was directly responsible to her. It was advertised in LUCIFER
and PATH in Oct. and Nov. 1888. THEOSOPHIST did not carry an advertisement.

Members had first to be members of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY to be able to
apply. The affairs of the Esoteric Section were not to be discussed
publicly. The membership of the T S and the membership of the E S were not
mixed. Matters relating to the E S were kept secret by pledges. In other
words the membership of the T S was not involved as such in the E S. [ see
THE MEANING OF A PLEDGE -- LUCIFER, Vol. III, p. 63 ]

FOUNDERS of the T S

Of course Besant, and CWL were NOT FOUNDERS of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.
They tried to veil and misdirect the THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT after 1894 up to
Annie Besant's death in 1933.

The 1st Vol. of "Blavatsky: COLLECTED WORKS" gives a full account of the
founding of the T S in 1875. [See NOTE below]

The THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY was inaugurated under Masters guidance, They were
the FOUNDERS behind the scenes in 1875.

HPB, Judge and Olcott were the only 3 "founders of the T S in New York" (of
a group of 16 who met in Sept. 8th, 1875 in HPB's rooms; PATH X, pp. 85-6;
see NOTE below) of the physical entity in New York The THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
- they were the only three who remained true to it until their respective
deaths.

ANNIE BESANT

If you read the books The THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT (1875-1925) and the 2nd one
for (1875-1950), you will find that Annie Besant became a member of the
THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY (May 10, 1889, p. 156-7) or, about 2 years before HPB
died. Annie Besant entered the Esoteric Section later in 1889 and was there
for less than 1 1/2 years before HPB died. [Judge had been pledged direct
to the Master in 1874, HPB declared him in 1888 to be "a successful chela of
16 years' standing".]

In the Los Angeles UNITED LODGE OF THEOSOPHISTS are archived all the
documents relevant to the course of T S history. Sylvia Cranston in her
biography "H P B" gives a consecutive set of documents. Ernest Pelletier
in THE JUDGE CASE gives a further set of consecutive documents.

Two weeks before her "death" (May 8th 1891) HPB, made Annie Besant "Recorder
of the Teachings" in the Esoteric Section. Since HPB was no longer there to
give further "teachings," this "position" presumably focused on preserving
and sustaining the teachings so far given out.

HPB hoped that after the death of the body she used up to then, Judge and
Annie Besant would manage the Esoteric Section affairs harmoniously and
conjointly [Pp. 159]. This worked for about 2 years, till Annie Besant,
who had a strong desire to contact the Masters directly (as Sinnett had
earlier hoped for, and as Judge actually did) broke her pledges in the E S,
and Judge (after due warnings to her) had to expel her from the E S and
terminate their "co-Outer Headship" (by "Master's orders" on Nov 3, 1894)
under the Rules of the Esoteric Section which she had vowed to observe.
[This is made clear in the 2nd book. Pp. 241-5]

W. Q. JUDGE

Judge resuscitated the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY in America, starting in 1886
through the work he inspired in and through the ARYAN THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
of New York, and using the PATH Magazine as its active organ.

Judge had first urged HPB to commence the Esoteric Section [p. 241], which
was started in 1888. When this was agreed to, HPB had him write the
"Rules." HPB in that Section declared on Dec 14 1888 [ p. 159] that Judge
was a successful chela for 16 years. She made him responsible for it, and
in America. He was never pledged in the E S, as he had been pledged direct
to the Master in 1874.

Annie Besant, as "Co-Outer Head," nurtured a strong desire to be in direct
and independent contact with the Masters (as Judge was), unsuccessful, she
broke her pledges. This forced Judge to expel her "under Master's orders" as
the Esoteric Section Rules had been broken by her. [November 3rd, 1894; pp.
241-5]

Further violations of the "pledge" of secrecy were then made. Members took
sides, and eventually the unfair pressures placed on Mr. Judge caused his
frail body to give way, He died Mar 21, 1896.

Annie Besant became President of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY after President
Olcott's death in 1907.

C. W. LEADBEATER

CWL took over the influencing of Annie Besant after Chakravarti was set
aside.

A reading of the issues of LUCIFER and THEOSOPHIST after 1896 will show
clearly how AB and CWL altered HPB's teachings of THEOSOPHY.

Margaret Thomas in her book:

THEOSOPHY OR NEO-THEOSOPHY

Delineates these differences comparatively, giving quotations that
illustrate the main alterations in doctrine. And, those detail the sad
course of the THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY thereafter.

The LIBERAL CATHOLIC CHURCH and CO-MASONRY were then instituted, and, with
the proclamation of Krishnamurti as an "Avatar," the STAR IN THE EAST was
commenced, but K., in due course, disbanded that, saying he was not an
"avatar." Those organizations have nothing to do with THEOSOPHY or the
THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY .

To make matters easier, perhaps we could reprint some of the chapters from
those reliable history books. I can assure you that all statements made
there are "substantiated and adequately documented."

Best wishes,

Dallas

SEPT 7th 1875

"1. At a meeting held in the rooms of H.P.Blavatsky, 46 Irving Place, New
York City, Sept. 7, 1875, it was agreed to form a Society for the purpose of
Occult Study.

Upon motion of William Q. Judge, Henry S. Olcott was elected Chairman of
this meeting, and upon motion of H.S.Olcott, William Q. Judge was elected
Secretary of the same.

Adjourned to September 8, 1875...this is ascertained as the facts by those
who were present.
(BCW, Vol. 1, 122)

NOTE:

Col. Olcott, in OLD DIARY LEAVES, Vol. 1, p. 118, remarks on this event from
memory as follows: (he) "wrote on a scrap of paper: "Would it not be a
good thing to form a Society for this kind of study ?"-- and gave it to
Judge. H.P.B. read the note and nodded assent."

[He also makes mention of this on p.114 of his book. OLD DIARY LEAVES
(Olcott) Vol. I
(BCW, Vol. 1, p. 473, 122-123)

Since Col. Olcott wrote OLD DIARY LEAVES, largely from memory, some
discrepancies have been observed by historians, these will be found
chronicled in BCW Vol. I, pp. 72-3, 94, 121, 123-4.

H.P.B. later narrated this event to Mrs. A. Besant, who then reported it in
the opposite sequence: she [HPB] having originated the idea, and then,
having a note suggesting the formation of a society passed through Judge to
Olcott.
(see LUCIFER, Vol. 12, p. 105, April 1893).

There is no question but Mr. Judge was one of the three founders of the
Theosophical Society who remained with it till his death.

SEPT 8th 1875

2. Pursuant to adjournment, a meeting was held at the same place Sept. 8,
1875. It is with this meeting that the minute book begins. Upon motion of
William Q. Judge it was voted that H.S.Olcott take the Chair, and upon
motion it was voted that William Q. Judge act as Secretary.

Upon request of the Chair, sixteen persons handed their names to the
Secretary, as agreeing to found and belong to such a society.

A committee of four, including the Chairman, was appointed "to draft a
constitution and by-laws and to report the same at the next meeting."
Adjourned to Monday, Sept. 13, 1875, at the same place.
(PATH Vol. 9, p. 1 - facsimile; BCW, Vol. 1, p. 123-5)

SEPT 13TH 1875

3. Pursuant to adjournment, a meeting was held Sept. 13, 1875.
H.S.Olcott acted as Chairman and C. Southern as Secretary. The Committee on
"Preamble and By-laws" reported progress.

It was resolved that the name of the society be "THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY".

The Chair appointed a committee to select meeting rooms. "Several new
members were nominated and upon motion those persons were added to the list
of Founders." The meeting adjourned subject to the call of the Chair.

OCTOBER 16 1875

4. Pursuant to a Notice dated at New York, Oct. 13, 1875, signed
Henry S. Olcott, President pro tem., a meeting was held at 206 W 38th St.,
Oct. 16, l875, "to organize and elect officers."

Eighteen persons were present.

The report of the Committee on "Preamble and By-laws" was laid on the table
and ordered printed.

The meeting was adjourned to October 30th l875, at the same place.
H.S.Olcott was Chairman, and J. S. Cobb, Secretary,

OCTOBER 30 1875

5. October 30, 1875, the Society met pursuant to adjournment.

Mott Memorial Hall, 64 Madison Ave., New York City was selected as the
Society's meeting place.

By-laws were adopted, but with the proviso that the "Preamble" should be
revised by a committee and then published as the "Preamble of the Society."

Officers were elected as follows: President, Henry S. Olcott;
Vice-Presidents, Dr. S. Pancoast and G .H .Felt; Corresponding Secretary,
Mme. H.P.Blavatsky; Recording Secretary, John Storer Cobb; Treasurer,
Henry J. Newton; Librarian, Charles Southeran; Councilors, Rev. J .H.
Wiggin, R. B. Westbrook, LL.D., Mrs. Emma Hardinge Britten; C E.
Simmons, M.D. and Herbert D. Montachesi; Counsel to the Society, William Q.
Judge.

NOTE

Mme. Blavatsky was by this time (1875) engaged in the writing of ISIS
UNVEILED. Mr. Judge's brother, John, was of help in preparing the
manuscript for the printers. Mr. Judge's participation is not specified in
existent records I have read. DTB.

HPB invited Mr. Judge to help her in 1884 at Enghien, (WQJ ART. ULT I 468)
: "...while I at her request carefully read over, sitting in the same room,
Isis Unveiled, making indices at the foot of the page, as she intended to
use it in preparing the Secret Doctrine."

In Blavatsky: COLLECTED WORKS , VOL. I, p. 406 we are told by the editor
that the diaries of HPB for the years 1875-77 "mysteriously disappeared" in
Adyar.

The diary for 1878 finds Mr. Judge mentioned several times as a visitor to
HPB in the latter part of the year: [August 5th and 6th (p. 409); Oct 18
(p.413); Oct. 30 (p.416); Nov. 12 (p.420); Dec. 3-4(p.425); Dec. 5
(p.426); Dec. 7 (p.427); Dec. 11 (p.429); Dec. 13-15. BCW Vol
I, p. 430.]

On December 17th. 1878 Mme. Blavatsky and Col. Olcott boarded a steamer to
sail via. England, for India; Mr. Judge remained in New York.

On Dec. 19th. 1879 (p.433, BCW) Mr. Judge visited them on board the
steamer prior to its actual departure, while it was still anchored inside
the bar of the harbor waiting for the tide.

DECEMBER 17 1878 to FEBRUARY 16 1879

9. In the year 1878 H.P.Blavatsky and H.S.Olcott were appointed
under a formal Resolution of the Theosophical Society dated ------- a
"COMMITTEE OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY" to visit foreign countries and
report."

The Theosophist for Oct. 1879, Vol. 1, #1, p. 1, 1st item, says:

"For the convenience of future reference, it may as well be stated here that
the Committee, sent to India by the Theosophical Society, sailed from New
York Dec. 17th l878, and landed in Bombay, Feb. 16, 1879, having passed two
weeks in London on the way." (The THEOSOPHIST, Jan. 1880, Vol. 1, p.95).
