Bart,
I n the world of politics it is the French who have for many decades been trying to get a toe hold in the middle east. You only have to look at what happened to the Lebanon and the French support of Syria. also .what the french were doing with Libya in the'70s onwards. Then take a look at Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand ,who blew that up? The French, then look at Indonesia and Singapore, look whose touting for buisness there!!Particularly in the military hardware department,
Then look at the reasons why France pulled out of NATO, and tried to keep the UK out of the EU. Then De Gaule trying to whip up trouble in Canada, with Quebec as the main centre of agitation.
cheers Iain

Weather. The summer was coming, and it would have been too hot for the
troops to be able to fight an extended mission. There were not the
resources to keep the soldiers there until the fall. And every world
government (and any person who kept up with the military analysis
services) knew it.

Who are the enemies that would have been
emboldened?
The militarist pan-Islamic/Arab movement and the governments supporting
it. They already had a joke: "You should never kill Americans. They
might sue you!" The United States had a reputation of cutting and
running or closing its eyes every time there was a terrorist attack.
This would have resulted in numerous attacks against the United States.

What do you mean by a power grab in Europe by France and
Germany?
France and Germany wanted to be the pre-eminent power in the European
Community. The most effective way to do so was to take the United States
down a peg. The governments of England, Spain, and Italy, while they
were not that keen on supporting the United States in Iraq, knew that
the United States would keep its hands out of their domestic affairs,
while France and Germany would not, and supported the United States in
Iraq more to keep France and Germany out of power than for any great
belief in The U.S.'s short-term goals.
