Interesting: May I interpose? 

We have a paradox here, or at least I do.  

The "thinker" on any plane realizes limitations and SELF. 

Metaphorically the "small Self" (very limited) wonders how and why it
exists. It postulates a superior aspect of its most refined faculties.
Hence it has some power of discrimination. It recognizes pain and pleasure,
knowledge and ignorance, beginning and end, -- contrast of opposites, and in
s doing it recognizes a balance principle that is uninvolved in those
differences. Perhaps it attributes REALITY to THAT -- and also recognizes
it has no accurate way of defining either ITS "EXISTENCE," or ITS
"NON-EXISTENCE."  

In fact any "definition" is impossible.  

Yet logically there has to be a SOURCE from which consciousness,
intelligence, differentiation and ultimate resolution spring.

Nothing comes from NOTHING. Yet, here we have SOMETHING. 

So to avoid infinite and timeless regression it posits an ABSOLUTE, and of
this idea it makes a concept ZERO - nothingness (emptiness).  

All the rest are a series (Nidana) of mayavic progressions. But central to
all is the permanent and eternal PERCEIVER.  

How else to explain our presence, our thoughts, our questions?

Yeah, OK. Sorry. I was being faceous. There are apparenetly about a dozen
of these "immortal I's" and so I can't help but think that perhaps some of
them are more immortal than others.

Depending on exactly which of the possible "immortal I's" you may be
referring to, OK. The I that is the Reincarnating Ego functons under
atma-buddhi-manas and so it knows things. Our Higher Self, the atma-buddhi,
is beyond manas and so thinks not and knows not. But the I that is
paramatman is beyond all of the principles and so is pretty much selfless.
It is this last I that I interpret to be HPB's conscioiusness-center and I
would place it on the highest subplane of the first cosmic plane of the
7-plane model,
