Re: Theos-World Re: Historic Research Query

Dear Spiro,

As far as I am aware this Eclectic Theosophical Society was one more among many independent groups that sprung up during the uncertainties following the Judge split. John Pryse was James' brother and they had a run in with the Adyar TS in the late 1890s. James continued to write books and John published them. By the way, John eventually retired in Los Angeles, founded a Gnostic Society in 1928, and lived into the 1950s. J.H. Connelly, was an associate of Judge and worked with Hargrove but did not continue with Tingley. I don't know off hand if he followed Hargrove during the 1898 split. If he did, he did not continue with them for long.
Hope this helps
Jerry

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply. The extra details are:

1)The Lamp, May 15 1900, in the Editorial Notes;
"The Eclectic Theosophical Society of New York announce as a result of a canvass of the votes of the members the election of Mr. John M.
Pryse as President; Mr. J.H. Connelly, Vice-President; Miss E.A.
Berry, Treasurer; and as Directors the President, Mrs. Julia H.
Coffin, Mr. Arthur Firth, Miss E.A. Berry, Mr. Frederick W. Flint,
Mrs. Rena T. Keith, and Mrs. Vittoria Cremers."

2)The Lamp, June 15, 1900, again in Editorial Notes;

"The Brooklyn Branch of the Eclectic T.S., meets every Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock at 130 Underhill Avenue."

I am trying to establish the lineage and time period of this society,
find further details on it's members and to determine, if any,
contacts with the English branches.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Spiro

Hello Spiro,

Off the top of my head, I am uncertain as to what
"stream" this Eclectic Theosophical Society belongs.

Can you give more details to us from that issue of
the Lamp???

Maybe Jerry HE has more info.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for this clear and useful overview of the various lineage
claims. As my query appears to have been lost in the fray, I hope
no-one minds if I try again.

Could someone please explain to me of what stream did the
"Eclectic Theosophical Society" in Brooklyn, New York mentioned in

the

"Lamp" of 1900 belong to, and if possible, who its members were?

Thanks
Spiro

This apparently was the beginning of the lineage claims.

In the Adyar Society we have the following lineage:

Blavatsky -> Besant & Leadbeater -> ????

In the Point Loma Theosophical Society the following lineage:

Blavatsky -> Judge -> Tingley -> de Purucker -> ????

In the ULT:

Blavatsky -> Judge -> Crosbie -> ????

In the Arcane School:

Blavatsky -> Bailey -> ????

etc. etc.
