A MODERN PANARION ORIGINAL EDITION OF 1895 TABLE OF CONTENTS SOURCES

Dear Dal,

I can guess that ==== only looked at the table of contents of the Moderen
Panarion as he would have seen that sources for each article are listed at
the head of or in the text of each article.

See examples below.

When one is using the Formula from the Proem, while reading H P B 's
articles and comments one discovers that She is pointing to a source beyond
the statements. This is where intellectuals fail. Because they don't see
that reading between the lines means following the Gnosis to the ancient
roots, and has little to do with reading.

I think that any effort that is not useing the formula, that is given in the
Proem of the SD, to recognize the Gnosis in what ever one is reading or
practicing is a waste of time.

Caldwell's criticism that all should be laid out so that the students can
see for them selves. See what?

A line from some where in the Modern Panarion;

The initiate's speculations, in fact, are not spun at all; they are laid out
before him by the accumulated wisdom of ages, and he has merely followed,
verified and assimilated them.

Caldwell's criticisms are in his interests only as he presumes to know what
real students need to know and where they should look. Is he saying that he
has read all these various works and has verified and assimilated them in
his life and that is why he recommends his process for an untrained mind to
find Truth realization and verification?

DTB CORRECT

I am with Crosbie when his advises "work with but untoward", Caldwell can
think say and do what he wants but he is not the last word for those who are
really engaged with work of Self discovery.

THE EDDY MANIFESTATIONS

Blavatsky, and was handed to us for publication in The Daily Graphic, as we
have been taking the lead in the discussion of the curious subject of
Spiritualism.-EDIT0R "DAILY GRAPHIC."]

THE LACK OF UNITY AMONG

SPIRITUALISTS
-----

[ From a letter received from Mme. Blavatsky last week we make the following
extracts, want of space alone preventing us from publishing it entire. It
was written in her usual lively and entertaining style, and her opinions
expressed are worthy of careful study, many of them being fully consistent
with the true state of affairs.-EDIT0R "SPIRITUAL SCIENTIST" (Dec. 3rd,
1874).]

                        READING VERSUS STUDY

                                THEOSOPHY MAGAZINE VOL. 8 p. 221

SUPERFICIAL and inattentive habits of thought may be said to be the
characteristic mark of the mind of the race in the present cycle. We read
for curiosity, for amusement, for information, for profit, not for
instruction.

H. P. Blavatsky, being a genuine occultist, had to take the mind of the race
as she found it. Her writings are not for the bigoted, the dogmatic, the
contentious, or the narrow-minded. But no more are they for the superficial,
the careless, the lazy, the shallow minded. If any of these conditions exist
in the mind of the theosophical inquirer or student, they have to be
overcome. No one else can achieve that task for him. In his own attempts to
over come these conditions the student starts on the path of true Occultism:
the study of the weaknesses and defects in his own nature, and the means of
eradicating them.

For purposes of the present discussion we may take it that "Isis Unveiled"
was written for the information of all those who had already discovered for
themselves that there is "something "wrong" with the religions,
philosophies, sciences and generally accepted ideas of the race in every
direction of human activity. "Isis" shows such a discontented mind not only
where the troubles are in the race mind, but what causes them. It was
written for those who want information, and is not a book of propagandum,
nor an attempt to convince anyone against his will. She was too wise, too
much an occultist, to attempt the impossible.

The "Secret Doctrine" was not written for the information of the student,
but for his instruction. It presupposes that the inquirer wants knowledge,
has satisfied himself that THEOSOPHY is Wisdom in the highest and most
inclusive sense, and is determined to avail himself to the utmost extent of
its assistance in his individual efforts to acquire what it can alone
provide.

The student has already found out that it is not the race mind, the race
weaknesses, the race defects, that stand in the way of his progress, but
their embodiment, their incarnation in himself. He knows this mind is his by
his adoption; that it can only be changed by himself; that that task calls
for unity (association with others in the same task); for study (individual
and collective); for work, unceasing work, to understand and apply in
himself and in all his relations that unity and that study, if he is ever to
achieve the great task of creating a new heart and a new mind (the heart and
mind of true occultism) in himself. Exactly as this is undertaken by
individual students is the great First Object of the original Theosophical
Society furthered.

Study does not call for much reading and little thought and
still less of application, but for meditation and action; for repetition
repetition, repetition, of principles and applications. It is not a "royal
road," but its sure result is the acquisition of the Kingly Knowledge.

                        CONTENTS LIST

Please find enclosed a SOURCE LIST of all the titles in the book.

May I suggest you attach this as an appendix to the text?

I do this because of the recent criticism that Caldwell has raised.

The SOURCE LIST will enable any student to trace the sources for those
articles.

It is quite true that whoever edited the book in 1895 in London may have
made those changes after HPB died but did not indicate them in the book.

In other words, at this late date, we are not sure if she edited, left any
instructions for their reprinting, or authorized them to be altered, or not.

Theosophy Company reprinted a photographic facsimile of the original 1895
book. No comments were included in the facsimile reprint.

We did not presume to make any changes to it.

Dallas
