Here is a fascinating refusal from David Green to provide any 
information about himself to John Crocker, who suspected something 
was rotten and expressed his doubts quite well:

If that dissertation was underway in 1999, surely it should be 
completed by now.  

While browsing through the 1999 theos-l archives, I noticed another 
strange pattern of circumstantial evidence.  There is a dramatic 
inverse relationship between the posting frequencies of Green and 
Caldwell.  After many months of total silence, Green suddenly 
reappeared with a vengeance in March 1999.  Here is the pattern of 
their posts for the year from then on:

March: Green 19, Caldwell 0
April: Green 11, Caldwell 0
May: Green 11, Caldwell 1
June: Green 11, Caldwell 1
July: Green 1, Caldwell 6
August: Green 0, Caldwell 2
September: Green 0, Caldwell 6
October: Green 0, Caldwell 12
November: Green 0, Caldwell 6
December: Green 1, Caldwell 9
