There's a little more to HPB's response to Adyar's betrayal, led by 
Olcott, in an effort to protect his own interests.  HPB never 
returned to India after the Coloumbe incident, despite Olcott's many 
efforts to bring her back.  She told Olcott she had forgiven him 
but, as I recall the letters cited in "The Theosophical Movement," 
she told Olcott there was more to consider than forgiveness.

Adyar was abolished as the parent society by HPB, and local lodges 
were essentially set up as autonomous at the time the Esoteric 
Section was created after the 1888 letter from the Adept that Olcott 
received while on the Shannon.  

HPB created "Lucifer" magazine, commemmorating independent thinking, 
in London after Adyar refused to allow her to defend herself against 
the Coloumb accusations.  After HPB's death, Adyar recreated itself 
as a defacto parent society, even though HPB had decommissioned it 
during her life.  

The authority for opposing the wishes of HPB and the Mahatmas cited 
by Adyar executives was completely unverified messages from mediums, 
without a single piece of objective evidence for the authenticity of 
those messages.  Olcott, at least, had the honesty to admit that he 
had no objective communication from the Mahatmas after HPB's death.  
Besant and Leadbeater didn't bother to deal with objective evidences 
of authenticity of the mediumistic messages they relied on to change 
the course of the theosophical movement by way of Adyar's assumption 
of parental authority over other theosophical organizations.
