Still, his friends gave us one of the greatest practical jokes in history. They
had him persuaded that the hemlock was really going to be blowfish toxin and

proclaimed a god. Of course he got the real stuff and the reason that the
19th century painting shows the person giving him the cup hiding his face is
that that person was trying not to laugh! The look on Socrates face when he
realized the truth was priceless.
