The 1900 Illusions

Friends,

Take a look at the useful compilation made by Daniel, below.

Now, the specific issue which the 1900 Letter to A. Besant addressed refers to the fancies that HPB was at that precise moment in the very young body of Mr. Chacravarti's daughter.

In 1900, there were "magic expectations" about that "divine child".

Leadbeater was not the "acting inner head" at the time. It was G.N. Chacravarti.

Of course, one thing is calmly saying in the years after 1900 that "HPB is here" or "HPB is there". That was done, as Daniel correctly shows. But another, quite different thing was to create a collective hysteria about an HPB's "immediate coming back" as a Tulku, and that hysteria most likely
had to be stopped to grant peace in her afterlife. That was successfully extinguished by the 1900 Letter, a document which clearly says HPB should be left in peace at that time.

After 1900, as long as I know, Mr. Chacravarti also ceased to be Besant's guru.

>From that year, it seems Mr. Leadbeater, who was already 'influential' because of his fancies about talking to the Masters, got to be the "acting Inner Head" for Mrs. Besant's E.S. and T.S.

The results are well-known, and include many scandals of various types.

It is not difficult, then, to understand WHY the 1900 Letter opens by mentioning the Tibetan saying according to which (I can't remember the exact words in English -- I'm far from my Library):

"Credulity creates more credulity, and it ends in hypocrisy".

These words are a perfect description for the period 1900/1934 -- the Besant/Leadbeater period.

>From 1934 on, Adyar TS has had little more than Managers; there were scarcely any inovators, in terms of worldwide international leaders.

By the way -- the "magical collective expectations" about "a divine child" were soon repeated with J. Krishnamurti, that poor pseudo-Messiah.

But at least A.Besant and C. W. Leadbeater left H.P.B. entirely out of that second cycle of illusions -- thanks to the 1900 Letter.

Best regards, Carlos.
