U.L.T.'S SIGNIFICANCE

Friends,

One of the central issues at Theos-talk, due in part to Daniel Caldwell's merit, has been the ULT. Here, at least, this small and quiet Theosophical Effort has entered the hall of fame.

Yet -- what can we do in order to really understand the ULT?

Of course each people has his own personal experience in this group or that other. In order to have a wider and clearer perspective on the ULT, though, I would like to submit the idea that one must examine the historical moment when it was created nearly 100 years ago.

The original group of the ULT was created by 1907, some seven years after the closing of the "end-of-century-effort" of 1875-1900. In 1909, it went public.

So the Effort was designed to make and go through what I call "the-hard-cycle-effort", corresponding to the difficult years "00-75" of any century.

This is the winter time effort, and Mr. Robert Crosbie was born under Capricorn, the winter-time zodicacal sign.

Perhaps no one will deny that the ULT has played a key role in preserving the original literature and impulse in the theosophical movement, while we had, in Adyar, that long "Festival of Initiations, Clairvoyance, Ritualism and Sex Scandals" (1906-1934). And to-day.

Now, a winter-time effort has its own characteristics, which, of course, can be seen as limitations too.

As to Daniel's criticisms on the ULT, they are a form of propaganda and in the long run are rather beneficent to this living, informal 'web of theosophical life'.

The continuing attention given the ULT by Daniel (and this has been so since 1998, says Paul Johnson) undoubtedly shows us that Daniel sees the ULT as something very important to the movement, in quality, at least, and in spite of its small outward size, and limited numbers of associates.

And that is an unconscious homage which, being a sincere friend and an associate of the ULT, I have to thank him for.

Regards, Carlos.
