We don't know, would he be healthy otherwise.
But he was against vampirism, explained how it works and how to 
protect oneself against it.
So he could't in the same time to use the vampirism as an excuse.

HPB was even more nasty if we to believe evetything what is written 
about her.

When mr. Tillet will die, I propose to write a book accusing him in 
all possible sins, and he will not be able to vindicate himself, and 
no court will help him.
