It is actually very simple.? The chela business is nonsense, pure and simple, designed to make theosophy appeal to Victorians who believed that everything had to be hard.? They actually embraced that sort of thing, unlike now when people would say that they would not want to be bothered and another approach is needed.? Blavatsky and the Masters were intelligent enough to realize that, or at least Blavatsky was, the jury is out on the Masters, and said what would most appeal to the audience.

If HBP were living now, the message would be stated much much differently.

Its well known that HPB was a chain smoker and addicted to nicotine and 
possibly hash. Its hard to see why she was chosen to be the messenger 
of theosophy even after a 7yr stint as a strictly disciplined chela.
