Here is some interesting info on names in India.

For a long time, most in India had only one name. Just the given name. When
British came to India, they brought the Roman Custom of two names. So they
told everyone should have two names. So many just prefixed father's given
name or the name of the city where their ancestors came from. Some just
added as a suffix the profession they are in. You will see Xyz Contractor,
Abc Engineer, Pqr Vakil. Many in rural areas still have only one name --
their given name.

So for many in the West it can be very confusing since going by the "last
name" you cannot detect family relationships.
