Yes, BUT Joseph and Robert, when Damodar is talking about coming from within - he is talking as a Chela and more than likely about INTUITION and I am not so convinced that my intuition is always correct, the only path -until intuition can be relied upon (perhaps through meditative contemplation)- the onlyÂalternative is to attempt to rationalise and analyse the material in order to make sense of it.

No?

Yes Govert, you've got the idea.

My experience with the SD is that if you approach it from a
literalist point of view you are bound to end up well informed in
Hermeticism, Kabbalism, Buddhism and Hinduism, but only in a purely
intellectual sense.

A couple ideas which may be useful combines the article by
Damodar, "Contemplation" (see:
http://www.theosoci ety.org/pasadena /damodar/ dam2b.htm# contemplation),
and and the advice given in Letter #49 of the ML: "Once we are upon
the topic, I wish you would impress upon your London friends some
wholesome truths that they are but too apt to forget, even, when they
have been told of them over and over again. The Occult Science is not
one, in which secrets can be communicated of a sudden, by a written
or even verbal communication. If so, all the "Brothers" should have
to do, would be to publish a Hand-book of the art which might be
taught in schools as grammar is. It is the common mistake of people
that we willingly wrap ourselves and our powers in mystery -- that we
wish to keep our knowledge to ourselves, and of our own will refuse --
"wantonly and deliberately" to communicate it. The truth is that
till the neophyte attains to the condition necessary for that degree
of Illumination to which, and for which, he is entitled and fitted,
most if not all of the Secrets are incommunicable. The receptivity
must be equal to the desire to instruct. The illumination must come
from within. Till then no hocus pocus of incantations, or mummery of
appliances, no metaphysical lectures or discussions, no self-imposed
penance can give it."

The properly trained mind takes the truths given in the SD, Bhagavad
Gita, and many other writings and illumines their words with the
light of intuition. Until that light is turned on through right
actions and efforts, all is but the inside of Platos cave, dancing
shadows only hinting at the true reality.
