Dear Katinka, MKR and Rose

My views are:

H. P. Blavatsky wrote the Key to Theosophy in 1889. And maybe that is where the idea comes from.

But in that book Blavatsky is in NO manner what so ever referring to any World Teacher as a Messiah or Maitreya. - She in fact mentiones in SD vol. 1, p.510 - that Maitreya - according to the laws on cycles - first will arrive in the 7th sub-race and not in the Kali Yuga, our present Yuga.

H. P. Blavatsky only refers to a teacher or as in SD. vol. 1 to a "Torchbearer of Truth", but no early Messiah or World teacher in the sense spoken of by Annie Besant in the Vahan in march 1912. And according to H. P. Blavatsky not one to be worshipped in its anthropomorpic figure.

 Annie Besant said:
"It may interest members to recall the fact that Mme. H.P. Blavatsky, one of the founders of the T.S., regarded it as the mission of the T.S. to prepare the world for the coming of the next great Teacher, though she put that event perhaps half a century later than I do. Which of us is right as to date, only time can show."

Allright. So let the time show. And time has passed.
I ask:
Who was or is the greatest (Torch-Bearer) arrival in the period year 1889-2009?
Was there any outpourings after 1975 or did they occur after 1925/1929?

Here is the quote from The Key to Theosophy:

"ENQUIRER. But if this danger be averted?"
.......

"ENQUIRER. A truly delightful picture! But tell me, do you really expect all this to be accomplished in one short century?

THEOSOPHIST. Scarcely. But I must tell you that during the last quarter of every hundred years an attempt is made by those "Masters," of whom I have spoken, to help on the spiritual progress of Humanity in a marked and definite way. Towards the close of each century you will invariably find that an outpouring or upheaval of spirituality âor call it mysticism if you preferâhas taken place. Some one or more persons have appeared in the world as their agents, and a greater or less amount of occult knowledge and teaching has been given out. If you care to do so, you can trace these movements back, century by century, as far as our detailed historical records extend.

ENQUIRER. But how does this bear on the future of the Theosophical Society?

THEOSOPHIST. If the present attempt, in the form of our Society, succeeds better than its predecessors have done, then it will be in existence as an organized, living and healthy body when the time comes for the effort of the XXth century. The general condition of men's minds and hearts will have been improved and purified by the spread of its teachings, and, as I have said, their prejudices and dogmatic illusions will have been, to some extent at least, removed. Not only so, but besides a large and accessible literature ready to men's hands, the next impulse will find a numerous and united body of people ready to welcome the new torch-bearer of Truth. He will find the minds of men prepared for his message, a language ready for him in which to clothe the new truths he brings, an organization awaiting his arrival, which will remove the merely mechanical, material obstacles and difficulties from his path. Think how much one, to whom such an opportunity is given, could accomplish. Measure it by comparison with what the Theosophical Society actually has achieved in the last fourteen years, without any of these advantages and surrounded by hosts of hindrances which would not hamper the new leader. Consider all this, and then tell me whether I am too sanguine when I say that if the Theosophical Society survives and lives true to its mission, to its original impulses through the next hundred yearsâtell me, I say, if I go too far in asserting that earth will be a heaven in the twenty-first century in comparison with what it is now!"

And we remember that the nearly all of the US Branch as well as the German branch was cut off in respectively in 1895 and 1912.

So while referring to the last sentence in the above quote, we can ask ourselves:
Are we in Heaven now?
:-)

none may say " Go " but whoever breathes " I come",

Has a Synthesis teacher arrived in the peirod 1891-2009?

Good question. Lutyens is not generally very reliable when it comes to old style theosophy, so she probably got it out of the besant leadbeater rumor mill. Perhaps some old article by one or the other.

It's not in the Inner Group Teachings, which means that if Blavatsky did tell some of her students this, it was in an informal setting, not in the setting of a formal studygroup. We're in the same bag on this one as on the Bowen Notes: said to be a report of something Blavatsky said, but we don't have the sources to back it up. Nor are we likely to get to such sources.

That isn't to say it's certain to be untrue.

One thing we do know: IF Blavatsky talked about such a teacher, as Besant said, she expected him later than Krishnamurti came.
