The Secret Doctrine teaches that all adepts are overshadowed, guided and controlled by one of the seven rays. These rays form what are known as the seven classes of ray ashrams and headed by a Chohan or adept. Chohan Hilarion is head of the teaching ashram on the fifth ray the sanskrit name is given in the Secret Doctrine as "Sannaddha". Each ray governs a "distinct application in a distinct state of consciousness" and for disciples and Initiates these states of consciousness are serviced from a teaching ashram. Chohan Hilarion 'collarorated' with HPB and HSO. JPC.

"seven distinct rays radiate from the 'Central Spiritual Sun,' all adepts and Dhyan Chohans are divisible into seven classes, each of which is guided, controlled, and overshadowed by one of the seven forms or manifestations of the divine Wisdom." ("Theosophist," Aug., 1886.) SD 1 574.

A LETTER FROM SURB OHANNES
[This excerpt from a long letter signed "X . . . F.T.S." was originally published in The Theosophist, Vol. II, July, 1881, pp. 213-15, and its authorship has remained unknown through the intervening years. However, when a Manuscript on the subject of Zoroastrianism, in H.P.B.?s own handwriting and held in the Archives at
Adyar, was transcribed and published in The Theosophist (Vol. 80, October and November, 1958), the name of the author of this letter suddenly came to light. It appears that it was written by the Adept known under the name of Hillarion (or Ilarion), also Hillarion Smerdis, who at one time resided on the Island of Cyprus. H.P.B. mentions this letter and definitely identifies its author. From other sources, it is known that Hillarion Smerdis collaborated with H.P.B. in the writing of her occult stories, such, for instance, as "The Ensouled Violin" which is actually signed with his name in The Theosophist (Vol. I, Jan., 1880). It has been stated both by H.P.B. (Light, Aug. 9, 1884) and by Col. H. S. Olcott (Diaries, entry of Feb. 19, 1881) that
212 BLAVATSKY: COLLECTED WRITINGS
this Adept has "gone for his final initiation, passing through and visiting us [the Founders] in his physical
body on his way, at Bombay." To the same Brother is attributed the authorship of the first part of Light
on the Path, recorded by Mabel Collins.

[The ?Eastern adept? spoken of by H. P. B. in the above article is Hilarion, who lived for a time on the island of Cyprus, and collaborated with H. P. B. in the writing of her occult stories. He signed himself ?Hilarion Smerdis.? Col. Henry S. Olcott?s entry of Feb. 19, 1881, in his Diaries, says:
?Hilarion is here en route for Tibet, and has been looking over, in and through the situation . . . ? This entry was made in Bombay. Master K. H. refers also to this journey of Hilarion from Cyprus to Tibet
(Mahatma Letters, p. 289).??Compiler.] BCW VI 280.

The names of the Seven Rays -- which are, Sushumna, Harikesa, Viswakarman, Viswatryarchas, Sannaddha, Sarvavasu and Swaraj -- are all mystical, and each has its distinct application in a distinct state of consciousness, for occult purposes. SD1 515.

> Much of this is pure Bailey and Steiner horse-pitooey, and has nothing to do with Theosophy. Steiner's source of "occult information" was his sex-magic practices (see Henk Spierenberg's study). Hillarion was not one of the Theosophical Mahatmas, although an occult adept, and an inspirer of a minority of Collins' writings, including Idyll of the White Lotus and probably Light on the Path. As for Hillarian being "Head of the 5th Ray" in your imaginary Bailey-ite scheme of "Rays" and "Heads", apparently even non-mahatmas are appointed (by who?....) as Blavatsky writes in a letter to "Light", June 8, 1889 that she recognized Hillarion as "an old friend of ours, a Greek, and no Mahatma, though an Adept...." I wonder if any "Ray" positions are open? (Does it pay well?) Maybe there are some minor Ray Headships available - like "Ray 4 & 9/16th," or something such.
