Establishment of the Theosophical Society

At every period of time, a Divine
thought is projected into the human mind to help its onward movement. World
history and mythology is full of stories how humanity is guided on its journey,
new heroes have come in, ruled, set examples, organizations are built,
nourished, did their work in all Space and Time. There is continuity to the
human thought and endeavor; and lessons for further advance are pumped in
whenever the earlier ones are well digested and assimilated.

When the material sciences and
psychological sciences had their say it was felt that the world would split
into two groups, one rank materialists and the other prey to spiritualism.
Unless people are told that there is a definite continuity of soul beyond the
grave, the life is eternal and certain positive proofs are shown â these
maddened crowds would not listen to reason. That there is vast Nature around
with boundless powers/energies packed within had to be emphatically told.
Exhibiting âMiraclesâ and teaching that there is no miracle at all but
âSpiritual Wisdomâ that needed to be explored and imbibed â has become
necessary.      The Wise-Men inspired
Madame

H P Blavatsky to be instrumental
in forming a Society for such studies and she had the association of Col. H S
Olcott who was very sincere and earnest on the subject. The result was the
formation of The Theosophical Society in 1875 and its universal appeal to the
intellectuals around the world. The Society slowly expanded its activities,
gave out literature on the topics of current and perennial interest. Eventually
it became an international Organization with its world headquarters at Adyar in
Madras (now
called Chennai). The Society has National Sections and branched all over the
world, wherever Freedom of Thought and Expression are not prohibited.

Madame Blavatsky gave out volumes
of ever-lasting interest âIsis Unveiled, The Secret Doctrine, The Key to
Theosophy-- explaining many hitherto unknown factors of Nature, Cosmogenesis
and Anthropogenesis. She was the person to make available the knowledge about
the existence of the Masters of the Wisdom to the West, and to revive such
knowledge, forgotten, in the East.

The declared objects of the
Society do not speak about the existence of such Masters, nor do they define
what Theosophy is. They only mention the need to form a Universal Brotherhood
of Humanity without any distinction whatsoever, to study Comparative Religion,
Philosophy and Science, and to investigate the unexplained laws of Nature and
the powers latent in Man.
The Teaching is important and not the Teacher. An organization has to be
principle oriented and not person oriented. It should not become a cult or sect
but must have universal appeal and touch.

The literature issued out by the
Society, (as also the Letters of the Wise-Men, later published) is popular over
the world. Many subsequent authors did add on to this Lore.
